XIII Bienial de Cuenca
Curator
2016

various locations
Cuenca, Ecuador

One of South America’s oldest and most prestigious biennials, the 13th Bienial de Cuenca was set in seventeen separate locales within this UNESCO World Heritage Site city. Using the title Impermanencia as its starting point, 47 artists from 23 countries participated, including from every country in South America -- the latter made possible by In Situ / Cuenca, a one-time partnership between the Bienal and UNASUR. Curators for the biennial are expected to fully commit to field research, artist selection, project development, site preparation, marketing, educational programming, and fundraising from foreign governments.

"The biennial in Cuenca, Ecuador, with its UNESCO World Heritage status, had long intrigued me from afar, and when I got the call to organize the 13th edition, I leapt at the chance to work with the city's rich architectural heritage."
